How often should you service your PlayStation / Xbox?

We usually only think about serving our consoles when start overheating or shutting down mid-game. But you may not know that with time thermal paste dries out -and needs to be replaced. Dirt & debris build up on the heat sink & needs to be compressed out. .

Why you need to do a thermal service

a)To  Replace Thermal paste: Thermal Paste keeps your PS4 from overheating. This paste goes between your console’s CPU and cooling system, it transfers heat from the CPU to the heatsink and keeps your PS4 at a normal temperature.  Your console is manufactured with thermal paste, but this can deteriorate, leading to overheating issues. Thermal paste’s job is to fill in those microscopic gaps between your CPU’s heat spreader and your heat sink. Even when metal seems perfectly smooth, there are small gaps between them, and those gaps act like an insulators. When you fill those gaps with something that’s a better conductor than air, you improve heat dissipation. .

What problems can it cause? .

If the PS4 thermal paste is old then it will not be able to transfer heat correctly and the device will likely turn the fan all the way up louder, most devices would just shut themselves down and eventually damage the CPU/GPU on the motherboard. .

b) To clean up debris built up on the heat sink: Overheating problems are also worsened by dirt and debris built up on the heat sink. With the heat sink plugged, there is no way for the fan to push the air through it to help it remove the heat. .
